CHFI v8 – Computer and IT Forensics Training and Certification
About the CHFI Version 8 (v8)
The Computer Hacking Forensic Investigation (CHFI) program from The International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) is molded along the lines of the organization’s ethical hacking program. The key difference with CHFI though is that it is focused on helping security professionals detect hacking attacks and other forms of computer sabotage and misuse. The course teaches individuals how to investigate the causes for an attack or other willful damage, the extent of the compromise and potential ways to mitigate the chances of something similar happening again.
Individuals who take the certification program are taught how to apply computer investigation and analysis techniques to gather evidence and maintain the evidence in a legally compliant manner so that it can be used for prosecution purposes in a court of law. The course also teaches students how to report incidents and how to look for and recover data that might have been deleted, sabotaged, encrypted or otherwise damaged in a hacking attack. Those who acquire the CHFI certificate typically have demonstrable knowledge of how to investigate computer break-ins, insider sabotage and other forms of computer misuse such as the possession of pornography, breach of contract, industrial espionage or intellectual property theft.
The CHFI program is not aimed just at computer security professionals. According to the EC-Council, the course is equally geared towards meeting the needs of police and law enforcement officers, those in the defense and military and legal professionals. E-business managers, systems administrators, banking professionals and government employees can also gain significant benefits from acquiring a CHFI certification, according to the EC-Council. Though there are no formal prerequisites to take the course, EC-Council itself though strongly suggests that the program will most benefit those who already have a certification in the institute’s Certified Ethical Hacker program. The CHFI program lasts five days, and the certification exam is conducted on the last day of training. The certification tests are administered online through Prometric. Exams costs range from $99 to $250.
